Frequently Asked Questions Topic: Age of Emancipation
|
Q:What is the age of Emancipation?
In Washington, DC, all parents have an obligation to support their children until the children reach the age of 21 or become emancipated.
Emancipation usually occurs when a child turns 21 years old, but it can happen before if a child gets married, joins the armed forces, or becomes self-supporting. Once the child reaches the age of 21, the order will automatically end. If there are more than one dependent on the order, then the order will not automatically end until the youngest child reaches the age of 21.
If you would like to prove that your child is self-supporting, married, or joined the armed forces, you will need to file a motion with the court to stop the support order. It is at the court’s discretion to determine if a child is emancipated or not. To further pursue these matters, it is recommended that you contact the Family Court Self-Help Center. |
