Locating Parents Who Owe Support

When the whereabouts of a parent who should be paying child support are not known, the CSSD will try to find that person. The CSSD has the right to search for non-custodial parents by using records such as:
  • Driver's licenses
  • Vehicle registrations
  • Tax records
  • Employment security records (which show whether a person is on any employer's payroll in DC)
  • Records that show whether a person is getting any public benefit such as an unemployment check or Worker's Compensation.
If the non-custodial parent cannot be located in DC, the CSSD will search other data bases.

Getting Support from Parents Living in Another State

If a parent who owes support lives in another state, then the CSSD will help get an order to establish or enforce payment of the support. The process is different depending upon the state in which the non-custodial parent lives. The CSSD will handle each case individually and do whatever is necessary to collect the support for the custodial parent or caretaker.

Federal Parent Location Services

If a parent owing support cannot be found, then the CSSD works with the federal government to find the non-custodial parent through the Internal Revenue Services (IRS), the Veterans Administration (VA), the Social Security Administration, and/or the Department of Defense.

This service is also used when there is a dispute regarding the child's custody or to locate a parent suspected of parental kidnapping.
