Topic: Passport and Account Seizure

Frequently Asked Questions
Topic: Passport Denial and Account Seizure

Q: I applied for a passport and my application was denied because I owe child support arrears.  Is this legal?  What do I need to do in order to obtain my passport?

Yes.  CSSD can submit your name to the Department of State to deny your passport application or renewal for a passport if you owe at least $2,500.00 in child support arrears.  You must pay the entire amount of your arrears before the Department of State will issue your passport.

Q: I was notified by CSSD that my bank account was frozen and would be seized.  Is this legal?  When will I have access to my bank account again?

Yes, under federal and District law, CSSD can freeze your bank account and seize funds to pay child support arrears.  Once the funds have been seized, you will have access to your bank account again.
